They have worked with some of the biggest producers in all of "modern Rock" including Steve Albini and Butch Vig but still never really broke out. You either get'em or you don't, ladies and gentlemen, Urge Overkill.

#366. Positive Bleeding-Urge Overkill
They have worked with some of the biggest producers in all of "modern Rock" including Steve Albini and Butch Vig but still never really broke out. You either get'em or you don't, ladies and gentlemen, Urge Overkill.
#367. My Brave Face-Paul McCartney w/Elvis Costello
So I spent the first half of my adolescence loving The Beatles, my second half worshiping Elvis, why wouldn't I love the song.
#368. I'm Nuthin'-Ethan Hawk
Just a fun song from a fun movie. A movie that along with Singles and Pulp Fiction defined my high school years.
#369. Across the Universe-Beatles
I true Lennon Masterpiece. Argued by many the "best Beatles song", not an argument I am gonna get involved in. Enjoy.
#370 Bertha-Grateful Dead
I got to see the Dead only 3 times and Jerry once. But I did get to hear this gem live. A timeless track from the Dead Catalog.
#371. Feist: 1234
Put the horse before the cart.
Thank you Apple. To really appreciate this song you have to hear the Banjo heavy version that was performed on SNL. I tried to download it here but NBC is tight.
#372. Unemployable-Pearl Jam
Don't know much about these guys, I've heard they're from Seattle. Alright just kidding. I could right another list all about Pearl Jam songs and how everyone has effected me differently. This track is off of 1996 album, Pearl Jam, definitely the hardest I rocked out to a Pearl Jam in release since VS. Great album, great track. The boys haven't lost a step in twenty some odd years.
#373. Jery Was A Race Car Driver. Primus
With Les and the boys it was always about rhythm, but that is usually the case when the band is led by a member of the rhythm section. Personally I prefer the years with Tim Alexander on the drums. Great track here off of Sailing the Sea of Cheese. This song pretty much started Primus most productive 5 yr stint, with Cheese., Pork Soda and Tales from the Punchbowl.

#374. Sucked out-Superdrag
From knoxville Tenn., ANother great one-hit wonder from the ninties. Elektra through these guys and Nada-Surf tons of money, with it they produced some decent music. They toured aggressively for years. Enjoy
#375. I've loved these days-Billy Joel
If you know me you know I grew up listening to Billy Joel. Every song on every album, this isn't exactly Uptown Girl
#376. Tones of Home-Blind Melon
Hey for a couple years they were a fun little band. And when Shannon wasn't fucked up it was a good live show.
#377. American Girls-Counting Crows
I love these guys. Just great american music, remind me of an east coast Tom Petty, IDK, big fan. Enjoy
#378. Summer of Drugs-Soul Asylum
You know, I love Soul Astlum, always have. Grave Dancers Union is one of my favorite albums. This is a track of Sweet Relief, by Victoria Williams.
#379. San Ber'dino-Frank Zappa
From 1975, with the last album from the original Mothers, this short (by Frank standards, 6 minutes) gem.
#380. Bathwater-No Doubt
I have to admit I never appreciated No Doubt till I saw them live. And had I not got the tickets for free I probably would not have gone, but what a great show.
#381. Scarlet Thing In You-Peter Murphy
I never claimed to be a Bauhus fan. Have no idea if I have ever even heard Bela Lugosi's Dead. This song showed up on the infamous Tomei mix tape and I have loved it ever since. Great voice, great lyrics.
#383. Tip That Waitress-Loudon Wainwright
I love Gordondon. A great track, examplifing his wit. Couldn't find a copy of him doing it, damn you Utube. THis guy ain't bad though.
#384. She's an Angel-They Might Be Giants
Obviously I am a big TMBG fan, and yes there will be many TMBG songs on this list. Because this is my list. Blast this one will ya
#385. More Human Than Human-White Zombie
Hey, it came out right after grunge and I needed something a little harder. Rob Zombie, better musician or movie director?
#386. Wannabe Gangstar-Wheatus
Better go back to Commack.
Again, another great song of a great album. Very fitting that Urge Overkill and Wheatus show up here back to back.
#387. Sister Havana-Urge Overkill
Another great track off a great album. If only Dale's mom didn't wash that t-shirt I would have their autographs. I saw so many great shows sneaking in underage at Lupo's in Providence. Good times.

#388. U-Mass. Pixies
Hailing from Mass., almost kinda like my hometown. Find me a band who formed between 1990-2010 that wasnt enfluenced by these guys.

#389. I'll See You When I Git There-Lou Rawls
There is so much stoey behind this song, if you know me, you get it. Lou is the best, and to top it all off, he did the soundtrack for the original Garfield cartonns, lol. Hey if you have a daughter, tell her her, if her boyfriend ever starts playing Lou Rawls, get out of that house.
#390. Four Sticks-Led Zeppelin
Some times you just gotta get your Led out.
#391. Superstar-Sonic Youth
No one mastered noise better then Sonic Youth.
#392. It Ain't Me Babe- Johnny Cash/June Carter
Dylan is The Bard, and this list will have a lot of him, but this is the version to beat.
#393. Save it for Later-Harvey Danger
What can I say, this is the version I like best. Plus Elvis is in this movie, nuff said.
#394. I Just Started Hating Some People Today-Beck
Sometimes nothing needs to be said. It just all makes sense. Thank you Jack White.
#395. Middle of the Road-Pretenders
The babies just come with the scenery
Some times you have to turn the dial to classic rock, blast it and drive
#396. I'm Wrong About Everything. John Westly Harding
Best artist to take his name from a Bob Dylan Song.
#397. Hanginaround-Counting Crows
BEst band I have never seen live
#398. Roots Radical. Rancid
Give 'em the boot the roots the radicals.
What can I say, I didn't have The Clash.
#399. The Whole World. OutKast
Before they were shaking it like a Polaroid picture.
#400. Slow Dog. Belly
Marie carry a rifle, Marie carry a dog on her back.
Sure we know Tonya Donnely from Throwing Muses and The Breeders. But lets not forget that she, and all the members of Belly grew up in Newport, Rhode Island. Great track off their debut album.
#401. I've Been Everywhere-Johnny Cash
Just another fun song front a great artist. Like a one of a kind artist. Like up there with Elvis and Bob Dylan. No?

#402. Dry the Rain-The Beta Band
Thank you John Cusack, ("I will now sell five copies of The Three E.P.'s by The Beta Band") . CHECK THEM OUT!
#403. Femme Fatale-Velvet Underground
Lou Reed, John Cale, Andy Warhol. Velvet Underground, what a force. Lou wrote this song at Warhol's request about Edie Sedgwick. One of the 5 best written songs ever. Nico sucks.
#404. Movies-Hothouse Flowers
Another case of me never hearing of a band until a song of theirs showed up on a mix tape someone made for me. What a great way to discover music. Don't really know much except that I like them, but in my research for this blog I found out they were "kinda" discovered by Bono, and once put out a 3 song EP with Def Leppard under the name, The Acoustic Hippies From Hell, lol. Check out their Home album, very good.

#405. Bizarre Love Triangle. New Order
From the ashes of Joy Division rose New Order and for years they reigned in New Wave, punk-pop and pop. Ian Curtis death on the eve of Joy Division first American tour left the boys for certain doom, but they came back and New Order is the proof
#406. Just A Friend. Biz Markie
#407. Blue. The Jayhawks.
Its a great song and it introduced me to a great band, The Jayhawks.
#408. Another Way to Die. Jack White and Alicia Keys
It wasn't much of a hit, but most James Bond Themes songs aren't, but it was a great collaboration of 2 voices and I loved it.
#409. Jesus Of Suburbia. Green Day
And you said rock opera was dead. I would have never guessed when these guys came out with Dookie, while I was in high school, that they would some day carry Pete Townstends' torch. They have and they done it proudly and in the meantime turned themselves into one of the most important Rock and Roll acts out there. They became what Guns and Roses was supposed to be.
#410. Bull in the Heather. Sonic Youth.
Yeah I know I am lame, I know Sonic Youth is one of the most influential bands in the last 30 years. And I know their impact on everything we hear today, and I pick their only radio hit as my pick. Hey, I wish I could say I was one of their big fans and know all their stuff, I don't, and I know what I like, and I have always liked this song.
#411. Desire. U2
I should be embarrassed, because this is the song that got me into U2, and I should have been into these guys way before this. But, if you are my age, Rattle And Hum was pretty big. Hey, I drank the kool-aid, I fell for Bono and the boys pretty hard, and I have been following ever since. Their are great Rock-n-Roll bands, and we all know who they are, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Band, AC DC, The Talking Heads, in my age, in my era, we have added to that group, REM, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Green Day and yes, U2.
#412. Settle For Nothing. Rage Against The Machine
It's Rage. They are one of the best bands ever assembled. Enough said.
#413. Ordinary Angels. Frente.
My great Frente story, they were the opening act for I think the Lemonheads, in Providence, R.I. I had scored back stage passes for that show. I ended up hanging out with Angie the lead singer of Frente for the entire Lemonheads set. Obviously I fell in love with her that night, I mean literally. Oh well, great night, great memories.
#414. Beautiful Girl. Peter Droge
I couldn't tell you much about Pete Droge, besides the fact that I love this song. I first heard it on the Beautiful Girls soundtrack. I hear he is currently in some super group, The Thorns, with Matthew Sweet and Peter Mullins

#415. Coming Down-Meat Puppets
It dissolves beneath my feet
They were an obscure band that you were not cool enough to ever hear of until 1993. Then Nirvana covered three of their songs on MTV Unplugged. They capitalized. 1994's Too High Too Die was their most elaborately produced album to date, and it was a damn good album, they even rerecorded their biggest non-hit, Lake Of Fire for the occasion. They say the ring and they went for it. In my opinion the Brother Kirkwood succeeded. Very good live show too, up their in their doll dresses doing all the songs no one was supposed to know. This is off the Too High Too Die album.
#416. See A Little Light-Bob Mould
If you want me to go, then you should just say so.
From Husker Du to Sugar, it doesn't get better then Bob Mould. They don't call Evan Dando a poor mans Bob Mould for nothing. Great track from a solo album in 1989, Workbook. Great artist and great gay icon, if I do say so myself
#417. Pusherman-Curtis Mayfield
From 1972, off of Curtis's 3rd album, also the soundtrack for Super Fly. Along with Marvin Gaye a true soul pioneer.
#418. How Blue Can You Get?-B.B.King
#419. El Scorcho-Weezer
El Scorcho baby, Rock-n-Roll!
#420. Hash Pipe-Weezer
You've got your big G's. (? I always thought he said you got your big cheese, lol)
I'm a purist and I'm a snob, so there won't be many Weezer songs on this list that are not off their first two albums. But this was the first song we heard from them in 5 years, it resonated. The boys still got it, and man do I love Rivers Cuomo.
#421. Change-Blind Melon
Does anyone remember the first time they saw Shannon Hoon. It was in one of those epic hour long Guns and Roses video that seemed to accompany ever single off of Use Your Illusions I&II. He was on the roof singing with Axl. Hell he even looked like Axl. I remember hearing they had gone to high school together and he had an album coming out soon. Well the Album was Blind Melon, the bee girl album, another great debut album. I saw Shannon and Blind Melon twice before he died. The first time they were great, even cover Carole King. The second, he was ravished by drugs, had shaved his head and the end was near, too damn bad. Here is a great track off there first album.
#422. Always Something There To Remind You-Naked Eyes
Great song from 1983. But most of all I remember my entire family dancing all over my house to this song, probably a little drunk and embarrassing our kids in the process. :-).
#423. Tequila Sundae-Urge Overkill
For one summer, Urge Overkill was on top of the fucking world. Saturation, at least with my friends anyways WAS the only album to have and play, over and over again. Got to see them live twice in Providence, R.I. during that time. Then the next year Quentin Tarantino put their cover of Girl, You'll be a woman soon in Pulp Fiction and they exploded even more, but nothing beat Saturation.
#424. These Eyes-Guess Who
Randy Bachman was a force to reckon with for years. First with the Guess Who, then with BTO. Here's a great example of his music. Who doesn't love this song?
#425. Teenage Dirtbag-Wheatus
Hard to describe how good, I mean really good this album is to anyone who, only barely remembers this one song. They hit it out of the park with the whole album, I keep in my heavy rotation still. I heard that they put out other albums, but never checked them out. I fell for that once, with Urge Overkill. Saturation was such a great album, then I tried to listen to they're stuff after that and it never compared. If you do not own Wheatus debut album, grab it and play it through. (Same thing with Urge Overkill's Saturation, lol)
#426. Play It All Night Long-Warren Zevon
in·com·pa·ra·ble/inˈkämp(É™)rÉ™bÉ™l/

#427. Pocahontas-Neil Young
I could probably make a list about my favorite 500 Neil Young songs, here's one of them. I tried to find the video from his unplugged show, that version is my favorite.
#428. Don't Take Me Alive-Steely Dan
Steely Dan, the thinking man's band. off my favorite The Royal Scam. For you, Mr. Reidy.
#429. Better Get It In Your Soul-Charles Mingus
Don't you just feel like your riding shotgun with Jack in 1950's America when this song is playing. Seeing the dark American landscape of the sleeping night, while going mad behind the wheel at speeds unheralded. Benzi driven and driving, not knowing the destination but knowing you can't wait to get there, because getting there means another adventure begins, with best friends you haven't met yet.
#430. Baby Driver-Simon and Garfunkel
There is a certain sound to Simon and Garfunkel, that trippy doo-wop and heavy percussion, great harmonies, just fun groovy music. Here's another great example.
#431-Love Me Tonight-Tom Jones
What can I say, I love Tom Jones. He has a couple songs on my list. Remember its my favorite 500.
#432. Tumbling Dice-Rolling Stones
Another track off arguable the best rock album ever made, Exile on Main Street. This was the first single off the album. Bill Wyman is replaced by Mick Taylor, Brian Jones original replacement before Ronnie Wood on Bass on this track.
#433. (nothing but) Flowers-Talking Heads
Johnny Marr helps out on this track off the last Talking Heads CD, Naked. Personally probably my favorite, oh who am I kidding I pretty much love everything the Heads did. Best American Rock Band ever, maybe. Definitely the best post-apocalypse narrative, until Waterworld of course. Kidding.

#434. Overblown-Mudhoney
Mudhoney, the Seattle band that didn't make it. Ha, one of the first real "grunge" acts of that era in Seattle. Well kinda, following Green River, which consisted of most of Mudhoney. Hmm, try to keep up, Mark Arm forms Green River after his high school band breaks up, in that band are future Pearl Jammers, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, Green River becomes the first official "grunge" band. They release 2-3 ep's/lp's(?) and they break up. Gossard, Ament and drummer Bruce Fairweather form Mother Love Bone with Andrew Wood, while Arm forms Mudhoney and gets signed to Sub Pop. And the rest is history, (for everyone but Mudhoney). Anyways if you got Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood all in the same room they would all tell you that Mudhoney was the best band around at the time. Plus how can you not love them after you learn that they are the basis for Matt Dillon's fictional band Citizen Dick in the Movie Singles, complete with Citizen Dick single "Touch Me I'm Dick" being a rip off of their first single, "Touch Me I'm Sick". And there is today's history lesson. This is a great track off the Singles soundtrack, making fun of the whole "grunge" blow-up at the happening at the time.

#435. Feel The Pain-Dinosaur Jr.
J Macias and Lou Barlow, this is practically a super group. Great song from a great album from a great time from the boys from Amherst Mass.
#436. We Only Come Out at Night-Smashing Pumpkins
Off the Infinite Sadness Album.
#437. American Music-Violent Femmes
Love the Femmes, and everyone knows it. Seen them live more times then I can count. Wish they were still together and touring. One of so many great tracks.
#438. Do You Realize-Flaming Lips
Can't believe I got into these guys by "She Don't Use Jelly". This might be one of the best songs ever written. These guys are unbelievable. And what a live show. Yoshimi is supposed to be going to Broadway soon, can't wait.
#440. Them Girls-Run DMC
Just always loved this song. Came off some come back album in the nineties. The album was Run DMC with various artist. It come some play on modern radio for a couple weeks. Like I said, just always liked it.
#441. Innocent When You Dream-Tom Waits
We swore we'd be together, until the day we died.
What a great song, what a great romantic song. What a great voice and spirit. Tom Waits, musician, actor, hall of fame member. Been covered by Springsteen, The Eagles, Rod Steward, Elvis Costello. I love his song. When I got married we handed out cd's as favors of all songs played at the wedding, my wife to be would not allow this song, she didn't like his voice. She eventually left, Waits is still here.
#442. Red Hot Moon-Rancid
....Take the bus downtown to the graveyard shift tonight.
Another band I never thought I would get into, but once I did, I can't get enough of. They do a pretty good job of keeping that candle lit.
#443. Break Away-Beach Boys
Sometime considered one of the last of the Beach Boys "Sunshine Hits", probably because it was one of the last songs from them in the sixties. Originally a flop, but later considered one of their stronger songs. Another great example of Carl's voice and those famous California harmonies.

#444. Shake Your Rump-Beastie Boys
The boys at their best.
Thursday, April 12, 2012
#445. New York Groove-Ace Freeley
Had to pick the live version and the video for this favorite. Did any song (or sound, really) better represent that end of the seventies, here comes the eighties era? On Sept. 18th, 1978 all 4 members of KISS released solo albums, this is the only song off all 4 albums to chart. Th spaceman came thru, and made a bad idea look, well, not so bad.
#446. Freedon-George Michael
Who would have guessed the "other" guy from Wham would have 2 such big albums in the early 1990's. George Michael was everywhere. Everyone owned a copy of his Faith album. This track of his follow up, Freedom, is, in my opinion, his peak. Which isn't a bad thing. Freedom is just one of those great songs for me, fun, makes me want to blast it up, dance around and play it 6 times in a row.
#447. Cecilia-Simon and Garfunkel
I fall on the floor and I'm laughing.
A great song. A family favorite. Picked a great version for the vid, you got to crank it, but it's worth it.
#448. Dyslexic Heart/Waiting For Somebody-Paul Westerberg
Again, I know I'm cheating but you just can't separate these two songs off the Singles soundtrack. And it's not the only time I will will be grouping songs off this soundtrack. Listen, I wasn't in high school when Say Anything came out, but I was for Singles. Grunge was my era, and what better represented grunge then Singles. Immediately following the break-up of the Replacements, Cameron Crowe tapped Westerberg to score, co-produce and contribute 2 songs to his ode to Seattle. These are those two, fun songs.
#449. Sin-Nine Inch Nails
Trent Reznor makes make music. Period. Now he is even an oscar winner! This song will also be on my next blog, The best songs that are track #7 on their respective albums. Nine Inch Nails are alot like Rage Against The Machine, (in my opinion only) in which their first albums were so great that nothing they did after really compared. They all good, just not as good as that first.
#450. Cruel To Be Kind-Nick Lowe
Oh I can't take another heartache.
Ah, Nick Lowe, a classic case of a British superstar who never transcended across the pond. This was his only US hit. Great song, good Retro Lunch stuff here. Lowe produced Elvis Costello's first five albums and wrote his biggest hit, "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding"
#451. Bloodletting-Concrete Blond
Johnette Napolitano led Concrete Blonde in the 80's and 90's. This is my personal favorite but there are many other good songs. Never got to into Concrete Blonde, just usually always liked what I heard. The Bloodletting album is a must for every collection.
#452. Strange Currencies-REM
Don't you love when you pull out an a cd you haven't listened to in 10 years and remember just how much you love a certain song. This is one of them.
#453. And She Was-Talking Heads
And she could hear the highway breathing.
Could be the best song about a girl taking LSD ever. I mean, right? From mid-Head hey day. 1985, Little Creatures.

#454. Put Your Big Toe in the Milk of Human Kindness-Elvis Costello/Marc Ribot/Rob Wasserman
So bassist Rob Wasserman followed up his solo album with one called duos. He then followed that up with one called trios. See a pattern here. Of the trios album comes a little Elvis. An outtake from the Spike album, which makes me wonder if McCartney had a hand in the lyrics, I just always loved this song. Loved the whole album. More tracks will be coming of these 1994 gem. Enjoy.
#455. Frank Sinatra-Cake
OK, you either get cake or you don't. Yes the lead singer just talks over music, but what great music. And you got love the way he talks(sings). This one is of Fashion Nugget, their second album, but really, their first 4-5 albums are good listen throughs.
#456. Birdhouse in You Soul-They Might Be Giants
You know, I have one. A birdhouse in my soul. No I don't. But I do have a blue canary nightlight.
#457. Do The Devil-The Amazing Royal Crowns
You know kids, there was time when rockabilly almost made a comeback. Thanks to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, the Swingers Soundtrack and these guys. Formed in my home state, Rhode Island, in 1994. Towards the end of the nineties they were getting along good with radio play on college radio and constant touring. A friend from high school actually played drums for these guys for awhile before the got big. Great track of theirs right here.
Friday, March 30, 2012
#458. Gran Torino-Jamie Cullum and Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood sings, hell he wrote the song or the music (I think). Enough said.
#459. Buena-Morphine
This was the first song on the best mix tape anyone ever made me. It introduced me to these guys. So great, so different. You had to see these guys live. What a show, watching Dana play to Sax at once. Glad I got to see, hear and meet them before Mark Sandman's death. Also check out Treat Her Right(band).
#460. I'm No Heroine-Ani DiFranco
Where does anybody start when it comes to Ani. Thank you Jessica for getting me into her. Been listening for years now, admittedly, probably not as much as I should, always a great live show. This is off her third album, Imperfectly, one of my favorites.
#461. Wah Wah-George Harrison
Originally written after a argument with McCartney during the Let It Be sessions, though it didn't show up till All Things. Great song, simply, yes, but not really. Had to include the version from The Concert For George" too.
#462. You're One-Imperial Teen
Another great one-hit wonder from the nineties. Once referred to as "queer alt-rock", don't know where that comes from. This single off their first album about Kurt Cobain is my favorite.
